Forró - London
Forró - The Brazilian, now very much European, hip-swivelling, dance floor-filling, popular music and dance originated in Brazil’s north-eastern states. Spreading smiles and well being are common signs and symptoms identified on dancers.
It ranges from a slow rhythm called xote to a faster version called arrasta-pé.Simple put, "It's less competitive than salsa and less pedantic than tango..."
Traditionally, it’s a couple's dance and the music involves only three instruments (accordion, zabumba and a metal triangle). Check-out our live radio selection.

Parisian Forró
“Ah, forró is magical...” and yes, it's spreading! We heard from dancer's in Germany, France, Sweden, Portugal, Switzerland and even "upside down" forró in Australia. In Paris, Prior to the Forró movement, local knowledge of Brazil was limited. “Eight years ago, Parisians only knew football, samba, fans and beaches,” said Rubens Pinheiro, the producer of Jota, a forró band originally from Rio de Janeiro that now calls Paris home.To accommodate the growing swell of fans, Bizz’Art (167, quai de Valmy, 10th; 33-1-4034-7000; bizzartclub.com) a dining and dancing club on the fringes of the chic Canal St. Martin quarter, also devotes one Saturday a month to forró and other Brazilian dance styles.
If you are visiting Paris, you can also dance in the Studio des Rigoles (46, rue des Rigoles, 20th; 33-1-4366 7600), a dance association run by volunteers, started offering large forró dance classes. Another dance and concert venue,Studio l’Ermitage (8, rue de l’Ermitage, 20th; 33-1-4462-0286), in a former biscuit factory, holding monthly forró evenings since March. And in Paris’s 10th Arrondissement, several bars have lured an artsy crowd with their own forró nights. Also, Cabaret Sauvage, a club nestled in Parc de la Villette in the 19th Arrondissement (33-1-4209-0199; cabaretsauvage.com), under a scarlet circus top. (Sauvage typically will host a battle of the forró bands during the summertime Feast of St. John, as well as the autumnal Festa de Cachaça, an evening of Brazilian dance.)
